covering

I agree with th Don't ask, Don't tell policy. I feel like people are automatically assuming that this is a bad thing to happen, but probably many people that would not want to fight next to gays and may not be willing defend them. Also gay have been stereotyped, so many people may not think they are not tough enough to make it in the military. This policy may be for the safety of the gays. At the same time however, I think that it should be up to the gays to tell others if they are gay. It is their right to say and act however they want.

I am going to look in to the software video that you showed in class. If not i will probably be using powerpoint. I am going to take key information from my paper, possibly my interviews, and I will look for a video to help show the issue of racism. I am not sure what source I will be doing, but if you have any suggestions on what to use please let me know.

Career

I am still undecided but I am looking into Criminal Justice for a major. In this field I am looking into becoming a Coroner possibly.  Coroners look at people that have recently died and determine the cause of death. They have many cases daily and investigate the location of the crime, if one was committed. Also they meet with the family of the person that has died to inform them the cause, such as: murder, accident, or suicide.

I feel this would be a good job for me because it is interesting everyday. Another reason I would be good at this is I have interened with the Coroner in Rockford, IL. I learned a lot and it was very fun. One important thing for the job is to not let the people's emotions for their loved ones get to you. I would not be affected by this, not because I am a bad person but because I tend to always hide my emotions.

Equal Education

This is problematic because people with disabiliteis still can do things and they need to be acknowledged. With these disabilities come difficulties at work due to them, but they will be over came. Her tone is a more serious one and is to get the point accross to the readers. She feels this way because she has personal experience with these things. Minority groups are more likely to be put in a special ed. class because when they come to America they are going to have a harder time in understanding the language. One example of how they change things is that animals that help the disabled can not be told they cannot come into a store or a work place as long as its not harming anyone or causing trouble.

interview

My partner for this interview was Brad. I started the interview by asking what my partner's major is. Brad's major is special education. I also asked why he chose this for a major. Brad said that at first he was not planning on major in special education but he took a class, which made him decide that "this is for me." He plans on becoming a special education teacher at the Elementary level, but he is not sure as of where he would like to teach yet.

feminism

I have been raised in a household were the woman is not treated differently than the man. In my house my mom still does laundry and cooks but if I was asked to do so I would be expected to do it. No one is making her do it she just does. I do not know if thats how it use to be when she was younger and she learned that that was her "role" but i would not expect a woman to do certain things around the house. I feel like i will not have a problem overcoming feminism. I dont really have any problems with women having male jobs for example. But I will continue view women equal to men.

lebian struggles

Being a visible minority would be like a black person mixed in with a bunch of white people. They would stand out and you could visual notice the difference. An invisible minority could be someone who does not look different or has the same body features, but the may have a different language or belief. Sticking to your own kind to me means that you stay around people that look and act similar to yourself. I think people stick to their own kind because it is what makes them feel themost comfortable. She was mainly going through coming out as a lesbian and dealing with self hatred. I feel like i do not really tone down any aspects of my identity, but i feel like i could do more to make somethings known about my identity. For example, I do not try and hide my christianity, but at the same time i do not just walk around and throw it out for people to know.

American Dream

The author states that he wants to become the President at some point in his life. He grew up in one of the most multinational corporations. He had gone through a very racist time in culture. He goes over parts of his families past and talks about them and sharing what they thought about others. He talks about using racial terms through out the paper such as "Jewing" someone. If he bacame President he said he would be fighting for libert and justice for all.

Paraphrase

When writing a paper quotes are use to much a majority of the time. "Only 10% of you final manuscript should appear directly quoted" (46-47). You should have an objective to keep the number of direct quotes down to a minimum. (Lester,1976)

Laura's writing

-What I like about her writing is that she starts out evrything with a story of Rosa. Then she gets into talking about the sex trade in cambodia.
-The biggest strength of her paper is the research that she has done and the information that she has given to the reader. One weakness that she has is she doesnt really explain how it relates to her or to the reader and what significance this is.
-I forgot what adding "action" is. But she said in the paper that if you wanted to get involved you could just help raise awareness, of the sex trafficing, to local people around you.

Reflection on reading research article

The subject in our article was Suicide of Asian Americans. The article was broken up in to seperate sections. For example, age and gender was one and another was religion. What I learned from this is how to properly analyze an article the best I can. Also learned how to get information if the subject is to personal that you may not be able to find enough participants.

The purpose of this atricle is, that we have to relate music to society. Serious music we have to uncover things concealed in the talk. The pop are scoffed at in talk of social functions. These to are described differently even though they are both types of music that society listens to.

focusing question

What effect does racism have on sports in the 21st century?

  • What sports can be questionably racist?
  • If the sport or sports have racism, is the sport racist against Whites or African-Americans?
  • Is there more African-American athletes in the Southern states rather than the Northern?
  • What is the White to African-American ratio in each sport?

Social Diversity

A culture that is socially diverse consists of people with many different backgrounds and perspectives.  Having many cultures in a society is multiculturalism.  The importance of having social diversity today is because without it I would not have the same friends as I do now.   I am glad that males and females can live together without worries of getting in trouble.  I also am glad that we do not have segregation like we used to in America.  There is still some racism in America but it is still not as bad as it was back in the day.
A person who has influenced social diversity is Jackie Robinson.  He was the first Africa American player to play in the MLB.   I have become friends with many African Americans because of sports, and some of my closest friends, including some of my coaches, are African American.  Without Jackie Robinson I possibly would not have some of the teammates I have now.
I am interested in investigating racism in American Sports.  I feel like this is an important topic because racism is still a major part of America.  I am still undecided but I am interested in Criminal Justice.  Racism relates to criminal justice because everyone thinks that police are racist.

Exercise 1+2

#1
1. You're supposed to use your own opinions
2. You're writing is mostly for your instructor
3.It's ok to say things that your instructer might disgree with
4. You can use your own expriences and observations of evidence
5. The information shold come mostly from books

When writinga research paper you can add our opinions on something, but the purpose of the paper is to do research on the topic you have been given or chosen. Putting your opinion in the paper isn't necessarly something that you should do, but if your teacher likes you putting your opinion in the paper then do it.
I think a lot of people think that writing is for your teacher, but it's for who ever is reading the paper. Saying that writing is fo mostly your instructor makes a lot of sense. The teacher is going to read it if he/she assigned it, but they will most likely not be the only ones reading it.
I agree that you can say things that your instructor might disagree with. You should make sure that what you say is appropriate. You and your instructor aren't going to have the same views on everything, so thats not going to be a surprise to the instructor if you disagree.
I think it's fine to use your own experiences and observations as evidence depending on the situation. You probably shouldn't say it if you haven't had very much experience with the subject.
I don't think that your information should come from mostly books although most of the information probably will. You need to make sure you use a credable source.

      1. People are entitled to their own opinions, and no one opinion is better than another
I agree that people are entitled to their own opinion and no one opinion is better than another. The reason for this is because an opinion is not fact so it's not necessarly true. People can have a wrong opinion but that doesn't mean it's not as good as another. All opinions are equal.

#2
- "Meanwhile, Pigeon haters host websites like Pigeonsmakemesick.com and propose plans for ridding cities of the 'vermin' including the tactical use of tennis rackets and loaves of bread"
-"The venders are apparently unliscenced and the police routenly attempt to flush them out, but this is clealy a half-hearted campaign. Who can balme them? The venders are everywhere, lingering at the edge of crowds, a fraternity of friendly bandits clutching their neatly folded cardboard tables, each equipped with a convenient handle of rope and duct tape. Within seconds the officers' depart, the venders descend on the square again, once again unfolding their tables to which the merchandise magically adhered."
-I think he came to understand venders can be pests at times and that we can love them and hate them. He was trying to understand why the venders would vanish and come back. I would say that the central question was probably how are venders and pigeons similar? The main idea is that venders are similar to pigeons.
-After reading this I found that I can relate to what this essay is saying. I feel like my friends and I can be the pigeons in a way to others in public. Not like the venders trying to sell you things, but just by being loud and obnoxious to them. I can tell sometimes by the way that people look at us.

In class free writing

Reading and writing has been very important to me in my academics, but I do not think it has been very important in my personal or professional life. the writing that I do outside of class is mostly texting and facebook. These forms of writing are easier for me, becasue I do not worry about the structure of the writing is. Also I am not getting graded on this type of writing.
The most difficult part about academic writing would be writing the introduction and conclusion of papers. These to areas are the ones that I need to improve in.
I do not really read anything outside of school. If I read things its either things a sports magazine or off of the computer screen.
I feel like this class will require a lot of research and will help learn how to use the research as well as possible in the papers.
